This season at Circles Washtenaw County has been both bustling and exhilarating! Just a few weeks ago, we welcomed our 6th Cohort, with 13 dedicated Leader candidates actively engaged in the extensive 14-session Circle Leader training. It’s truly remarkable to look back and realize that a little over six years ago, our first cohort took its initial steps. This program’s endurance has been made possible by the unwavering commitment of Leaders, Allies, resource teams, volunteers, and the generosity of many donors. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has joined us on this incredible journey.
In other exciting Circles news, Cohort 5 is nearing the culmination of their 18-month commitment, and we eagerly anticipate celebrating their launch from the program on Tuesday, January 23. A dedicated group of Cohort 5 Leaders and Allies is collaborating with our Big View team to organize a community event in April 2024, focusing on the vital topic of Black Maternal Health.
With the addition of Cohort 6, our children’s program has doubled in size and now welcomes approximately 40 youth every Tuesday night. This past August, our Children’s Program Coordinator, Daishayanea Jackson, orchestrated a captivating evening of drumming and song with the Taiko Drumming Group, an experience that brought joy to everyone at Circles.
In July, we had the privilege of selecting a Circle Leader to represent us at the 2023 Elevating Voices Power Summit hosted by Food Gatherers. Alisha Spencer, our Cohort 5 Leader, had the opportunity to fly to Washington, D.C., and share firsthand experiences of food insecurity in Washtenaw County. Through Alisha’s journey, we gained valuable insights into the stark reality of food insecurity in our community, as well as the various avenues through which we can advocate for meaningful change.
Now, as we embark on a new journey with Cohort 6, we’re also commencing the vital work of recruiting Allies who will walk alongside these new Leaders. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming an Ally, our team is eager to talk to you! Allies for Cohort 6 will be paired with Leaders in March 2024 and commit to an 18-month journey of transformation and support from that point onward.
